Dear Editor/Producer:

Historic tourism is one of the hottest trends in tourism today, turning the people, places and events of the past into tourism profits. Tourism groups around the country are embracing this history-based approach as they scramble to prepare guides to landmark sites for this summer’s travelers. Now a stunning new photography book has done their work for them – at least in New York State. Historic New York: Architectural Journeys in the Empire State (The Landmark Society of Western New York/Syracuse University, Hardcover $49.95, October 2006) by photographer Andy Olenick and author Richard O. Reisem is the perfect tool for summer travelers planning a trip to any and every part of New York State.

Olenick and Reisem, who donated their efforts on this book, began work on Historic New York five years ago, and it certainly is the most ambitious project to date for this award-winning team. They traveled thousands of miles across the state, visiting hundreds of locations, and consulting with dozens of preservation leaders and historians to create a book that covers more than four centuries of landmark architecture, from structures reflecting the state’s early history as a Dutch colony to the most avant-garde post-Modern designs.

This year as New York State celebrates 30 years of “I Love New York,” enjoy a breathtaking journey to some of New York State’s most treasured architecture with this exploration of the state’s diverse culture and history. Whether you’re in Long Island, New York City, the Hudson Valley, the Capitol District, the Finger Lakes, the Adirondacks, or Niagara Falls – Historic New York has something for everyone.

Please consider an interview, a site tour, or possibly a mini-tour in your area with photographer Andy Olenick to talk about the making of Historic New York and the impact it will have on historic preservation and tourism in New York State. We will provide any of the images in the book at no charge for use in print and television pieces about the book.

Historic New York is certain to become a favorite guide for travelers planning to visit the Empire State this summer and for many summers to come.
