FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE“WORKS ON PAPER AND ASSEMBLAGES” OPENS SEASON AT THE WHITE GALLERYConnecticut Artists Kick-off the Summer Season in Lakeville, CT Lakeville, CT, May 17, 2007 – “Works on Paper and Assemblages,” a unique collection of paintings and prints by Ann Conrad, Constance Old and Eve Stockton; and assemblages by Jane de Jonge, will open the summer season at The White Gallery in Lakeville, CT on May 25th and run through June 24th. An artist reception is scheduled for Saturday, May 26th from 4-7 pm. “We’re very excited about this collaborative show,” said Susan Galluzzo, director of The White Gallery with her husband, Tino. “Works on paper are a medium that lend themselves to experimentation in color and form regardless of the artist’s basic style, whether it is representational, abstract or even minimalist. Works on paper allow collectors at all levels to expand their collections to include extremely high quality pieces of art.” The three women painters/printmakers each bring a very different and unique element to the collection. Ann Conrad likens her work to her writing, “I’m not a one-draft person”, she says, “I find pleasure and take interest in the evolution of an idea or image and in the multitude of possibilities that exist to communicate an idea, believing that each layer and reworking adds depth, history, richness, and both mystery and insight to the piece.” Conrad is fascinated by edges and boundaries and the push and pull of the picture plane. Averse to using digital imagery because it restricts the creative process, she is intrigued by the human component of making a hand-pulled print, a work on paper or an oil painting — with her latest pieces reflecting the “journey of her creation.” Her work has been included in solo and group exhibitions throughout the Northeast and is in both public and private collections including Princeton University. The “Barcode Experiments” of Constance Old took form in 2001 when she decided to translate her experience as a consumer into one of producer by collecting, reusing and transforming barcodes — the emblem of the consumer society into something new. A former graphic designer and art director at Martha Stewart Living, Old’s mixed media pieces use actual barcodes and packaging from products she purchased. “My work is inspired by my role as a consumer, collector and producer, and is all about the process,” say Old. “Barcodes act as my armature and palette for creating a piece. With these parameters set, I then see where a piece takes me in its making until we (the piece and I) arrive at a satisfactory point of finish.” Eve Stockton comes to painting and printmaking via the organic world coupled with her multifaceted background in architecture. “My artwork is about nature and of nature,” says Stockton. “Nature’s creative force is evoked by probing states of dynamic transition in general and rhythms of individual forms and phenomena in particular.” Her current paintings and prints are evocative of landscapes, skyscapes, and cellular activity. She has exhibited in solo and group shows throughout the region including the Northeast Juried Exhibition for which she has won two awards. Jane de Jonge rounds out the show with her very imaginative assemblages that reflect both her background in philosophy and her skills in product design. “Jane’s whimsical work is deeply rooted in memory and has an artistic element that is both endearing and thoughtful,” said Tino Galluzzo. An expert at taking found objects and turning them into three-dimensional structures, de Jonge’s work is lauded by both private and corporate collections, has been reviewed in The New York Times, is included in collections at Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers University, and has been shown at the Mira Mar Gallery in Sarasota, the Brownson Gallery at Manhattanville College, and in numerous museum exhibitions around the state.
